What is ‘Parts’ work?

In 20 years of coaching I have studied and used many approaches.

The approach that works best for clients is based on Internal Family Systems, (IFS) or ‘parts’ work

IFS, developed by Dr Richard Schwartz is based on the idea of an ever-present ‘Self’. Your Self holds tremendous potential. When you are in ‘Self energy’ you are calm, connected, courageous and creative.

Your ‘Parts’ are the beliefs, emotions, patterns, thoughts and sensations that co-exist with your Self.
They generally arise while young. They protected you when you are vulnerable and dependant on others. They often get stuck.

IFS coaching supports you to

  • Understand the origin story of your Parts - what protective roles they took on

  • Explore your Self energy and your Parts; especially the stuck Parts.

  • Distinguish between the Part’s intent (always good), and the impact (not always good)

  • Example, a part that kept you safe (intent) as a child may limit your life as an adult (impact)

  • When stuck Parts trust your Self, they can grow naturally

  • This allows you to live powerfully in your present.


Are all the ‘little voices’ welcome? Yes!

Anger suggests action. A boundary has been breached. It’s fuel.

Fear is a signal to prepare your system, just in case. Fight, Flight, Freeze or Fawn are fear responses.

Disgust prompts caution

Sadness prompts reflection and self-care.

Joy is a message - do more of this!
